[GB] GBRf increases Class 66 order to 21 [Updated 2014-02-07]

Home GM / EMD / Progress Rail JT42CWR(M/-T1) / Class 66 Beacon Rail Leasing [GB] GBRf increases Class 66 order to 21 [Updated 2014-02-07]

This year EMD will build 23 Class 66 locomotives before European emission regulations don't allow the production of these locos for use in Europe anymore. GBRf already confirmed an order for eight of the 23 locomotives in 2013, but it has now confirmed that it will acquire another 13 units. This order will raise the number of Class 66 locomotives in the GBRf fleet to 71.

Note that of the 23 Class 66 locomotives that EMD plans to build, only two locomotives are left now. This raises the question: why did GBRf didn't purchase the entire batch? And, where will the remaining two locos end up?

Another remarkable thing is something the British magazine Rail reports about. It states that the new Class 66s will be build as modified JT42CWRM locomotives and not as JT42CWR-T1. Both types are enhanced versions of the regular JT42CWR, but the '-T1' used to be the version for the UK and the 'M' the version for mainland Europe. Currently, the recently imported 66747-66749 are the only modified JT42CWRM locos in service on the British network. 66750 and 751 are imported from the mainland and modified as well, but are regular JT42CWR locomotives.
