In January 1993, National Power became GM-EMD's third customer for the JT26CW-SS by ordering one locomotive for its intended takeover of coal and limestone services to its South Yorkshire power stations. Built in London, Ontario, locomotive 59201 left Canada for the UK on board of the MV Haskerland through the port of Halifax in January 1994. On February 18, the locomotive was unloaded in the port of Hull.
After a period of testing and driver training, National Power decided to order a further five locomotives: 59202-206. On August 4, the MV Condock V arrived at Hull carrying the five Class 59s on board. A day later, the locomotives set foot on British soil, increasing National Power's Class 59 fleet to six. The following names were applied to the locomotives:
59201: Vale of York
59202: Vale of White Horse
59203: Vale of Pickering
59204: Vale of Glamorgan
59205: Vale of Evesham (renamed L Keith McNair on March 28, 1998)
59206: Pride of Ferrybridge
1998: the EWS era
On April 1, all rail activities of National Power were taken over by the English, Welsh and Scottish Railways (EWS). Gradually, the locomotives lost their blue National Power livery and received the EWS colour scheme.
2009: DB Schenker Rail UK
As of January 2009, EWS continued its activities as part of DB Schenker Rail and was renamed into DB Schenker Rail UK.
2016: DB Cargo UK
On March 1, 2016, DB Schenker Rail UK rebranded into DB Cargo UK. The latter put the six locos up for sale in June 2019, following the loss of the Mendip Rail aggregates business to Freightliner.
